Just a short kayak ride away from Koh Mak sits the sensational unfinished island of Koh-Kham. Grab a scheduled boat from Koh Mak going a couple of times a day, or as just mentioned kayak there! It is definitely worth a visit, with its perfect white sand, clear water and amazing scenery.
Arriving at the long wooden jetty you get a view of a piece of paradise in front of your eyes. Begin to see what it would be like to arrive in style at a 5 star resort, on a perfectly white powder sand beach. But luckily for us this never materialised and so many other people can enjoy this piece of paradise.
Uninhabited at the time of our visit this island has the beginnings of an amazing hotel resort. Unfinished, the resort now has kind of jungle feeling to it. We walked around the shell of the building, saw where each villa would have had its own plunge pool! It could have been sheer luxury. Now it looks more like a scene from tomb raider, or Ta Prohm in Siem Reap!
So what has happened to it?
Luckily the locals from Koh Mak have decided to maintain the beach and grassy grounds of the would-be resort. Not only do they provide the transport (at a small fee) in order to get to the island, they have even created a bar! Lush cool refreshments to greet you and home made wooden seating for you to crash out in!
However, I strongly suggest you take your snorkelling equipment with you as the lava rocks just off the shore are the perfect place to spot fish. The water is shallow, safe and teeming with a variety of colourful fish.
